Parish Secretary/Bookkeeper Position
Some
of you may have heard the sad news that Marylee Harris, our parish secretary and bookkeeper, along with her husband Paul,
will be moving to Austin, Texas this summer. It will be difficult but necessary, of course, to find a replacement for her.
The ideal for me as pastor is to find one person who can fill both positions.
The
position of both secretary and bookkeeper is a full-time job. It may be necessary to have one person in the secretarial job
and one serving as bookkeeper, both on a part-time basis. The salary level will be related to the applicant's skill and experience.
Applications
and job descriptions for the positions will be available at the receptionist's desk in the rectory office on Monday,
March 24th. The start-up date for the job is July 1, 2008. Applicants are required to provide at least two references.
The Catholic Church requires an independent background check on all new employees. The parish will pay a nominal fee for this
background check. The background check is done with the applicant's knowledge and permission.
Applicants
for this position(s) do not need to be parishioners. It is, of course, very helpful if the parish secretary is Catholic. Please give me a call at 245-2432 if you would like
more information about his position.

Missioner Tales
This story is taken from
the April edition of Maryknoll magazine. Although I was not a Maryknoll seminarian, in 1972 I graduated from the Maryknoll
School of Theology in Ossining, New York. I earned master's degrees in theology while there. You may subscribe to this magazine
by writing to: Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, P.O. Box 302, Maryknoll, New York, 10545-0302. (The Maryknoll "campus" has its own zip code and name).
The
Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers have served the people in the diocese of Honolulu
and throughout the world for many years. They are a very popular and respected missionary congregation.
The story, then...
As a high school teacher,
I cringed when I was asked to “take care of” a second-grade class in Arequipa, Peru, while the teacher was at
a meeting. What could I do with 50 little people? Arriving at the classroom, I saw that the teacher had left work for the
children to do. It was absolutely quiet. Each one was writing away except one little boy. I went over to him and asked, “Why
aren’t you writing like the other children?”
“I don’t have
a pencil,” he quickly replied. In a flash the little fellow sitting next to him snapped his own pencil in two and handed
half of it to his friend without saying a word and went right back to his own work! I was amazed! He didn’t hesitate
a moment about giving half of what he possessed to his friend. He had a bigger pencil than he needed and his friend had none.
What a lesson I learned!
The receiver of the pencil,
by the way, whipped out his little razor blade – a poor boy’s version of pencil sharpener – and sharpened
the dull end and went on with his work.

Laughter, The Best Medicine
v A minister parked his car in a no-parking
zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield
wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses."
When he returned,
he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you
a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation."
v There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and
announced to his congregation: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is we have enough money to pay for our new building
program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets."
