v HEALTH NOTES

More about Asthma … there are two types of asthma…allergic asthma is triggered by allergens such as dust, pollens, pet dander. Non-allergic asthma is triggered by factors such as anxiety, stress, exercise, smoke or viruses. Many of the symptoms are the same…coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or rapid breathing. Proper treatment by your doctor can control these symptoms.

v ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM
When:     Monday, July 7 – Friday, July 11, 2008
Where:     Immaculate Conception School – Lihue
Two Sessions: 9:00 a.m.–12 Noon; 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
The Faith Formation Conference is a celebration of our faith and an opportunity to deepen our communion with Christ through the presence, insights, wisdom, and support of our facilitators and each other. Come nurture your spirit and be re-energized! This program supports a major recommendation of our Diocesan Road Map for Pastoral, Program, and Facility Needs 2008-2013 – Faith Formation.
This program is open for all adults interested in their religious continuing education.  The courses in this program may be applied to catechist certification in our diocese.
You can register on-line at www.hi-care.org or contact Sister Florence Remata at 245-2432.  The fee per class is $10; checks should be made payable to “Office of Religious Education”.  The deadline for registration is June 23, 2008.

v FLOWER MINISTRY

The parish is in need of two more people to work with the four teams who arrange the flowers that decorate our church.  The flowers are delivered every Friday and the Flower Ministry team completes the arrangements Friday afternoon or evening. We have 2 husband and wife teams – a good way to spend some time with your spouse while performing a very special service for your parish.  Since there are four teams, your turn comes up only once a month.  Please call the parish office, 245-2432, to volunteer.  Mahalo!

v WELCOME TO TWO NEW EMPLOYEES

Laura Goodrich has been hired as our new parish secretary and Leori Guarin will be our new bookkeeper. Both ladies are parishioners and they will assume their duties on July 1.

Marylee Harris will be giving them an orientation from July 1- July 8.

Marylee and Paul Harris will be moving to Austin, Texas some time this summer.

v DIOCESAN TASK FORCE # 5

That sounds like a very serious name for the newly established committee that has been formed by Bishop Silva to study the fifth topic of our diocesan strategic plan. Actually, much preliminary work has been done on this topic of studying the situation of all of our facilities by the diocesan building commission.

The building commission has spent the last two years working to update all diocesan norms and policies regarding the care of our present buildings and guidelines for the construction of new buildings. There are a number of very professional advisors on the building commission that have given of their experience and expertise in the complete rewriting all of building documents.

The first new document that the Diocesan Task Force # 5 is circulating to all pastors is a very comprehensive resource manual helping parishes come up with a five-year maintenance plan. Once a parish submits their maintenance plan to the building commission then the parish will be able to establish an "assessment free" (tax free) savings account with the diocese to pay for the work listed on the five-year plan.

Our parish will soon appoint a five-member building and grounds committee to work on our five-year plan. In fact we already have a first draft of a plan at this time. As many of you know we have spent a great deal of money improving our parish buildings and property.

Over the last five years we have spent $267,747 on building repairs and improvements.

That breaks down by fiscal year ending...

June 2004…     $10,490      June 2005…$21,084

June 2006…     $123,980              June 2007…$65,890

June 2008…     $46,303

If the new policy of having an "assessment free" savings account were in place five years ago we would have saved about $27,000.

All the money collected in the parish development fund plus some budgeted operating monies and some foundation money pay for our building repair and improvement expenses.

Fr. Bill is a member of the diocesan building and planning commission and a member of Task Force #5.

v DEAR BROTHERS & SISTERS,

Thank you so much for all your support and prayers. I am glad to be back here in Hawaii for my summer break. I just finished my third semester at St. Patrick’s Seminary and it has been a wonderful experience thus far studying theology.

At this time, I would like to give the parish an update of where I am on my journey to the priesthood. I have just finished my second year of theological studies at St. Patrick’s, and I am currently doing my summer assignment at St. Joseph’s Parish in Hilo. I will be back on Kauai at the end of July to make one last visit to Immaculate before I return to St. Patrick’s to begin my third year of studies. I would like the parish to know that my studies at the seminary has deepened my faith, hope and love for our Lord and Jesus Christ, along with a deeper devotion to God especially in the Holy Eucharist, and through a deeper devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary. I thank God for giving me this opportunity to grow spiritually closer to his Son Jesus as he leads my fellow seminarians and me to the priesthood of his Son. Please keep me in your prayers as I keep you all in my daily prayers. May God bless all of you!

In Christ,

Anthony Rapozo

v STAINED GLASS WINDOW PROJECT

As you know, we have been pursuing the possibility of purchasing two antique style stained glass windows for the sanctuary in our church. The idea is to return to the original look of the church although the original “stained glass” windows were really colored decals.  The windows we are looking at now will be made of real antique pieces of glass.

A Maui stained glass window artist has shown us drawings of several beautiful designs that capture the artistry of our old and very lovely high altar. We have made the final selection of the design and colors.  The artist created a large watercolor rendition of our choice.  The watercolor was on display in the back of the church for several weeks.

The tentative cost estimate is between $8,000 and $9,000 per window. The cost of these windows is not in our normal budget so we will depend on memorial and other donations to cover the cost.  To date we have raised $7,150 to pay for the creation and installation of the two stained glass windows.

v DEVELOPMENT FUND WEEKEND

Next weekend, July 5 and 6, we will have our monthly second collection for the Development Fund.  Because of your generosity, we have been able to complete many repair/replacement projects and keep our church and buildings in good shape.
