HEALTH NOTES

May is American Stroke Month.  A stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts.  That part of the brain is unable to get blood and oxygen and so it starts to die.  High blood pressure can lead to a stroke so know your blood pressure and take your medication if your doctor prescribes it.        www.giveme5forstroke.org

Clergy Schedule

v  Father Bill will be on vacation from May 13-28th. He will be going back to New York and New England to visit his friends and family.

Convalidation Mass This September

I would like to plan a group Convalidation Mass for this September. A Convalidation marriage ceremony is an opportunity for civilly married couples (by a judge, a minister or a justice of the peace). The couple must be free to marry in the Catholic Church in order to have a Convalidation ceremony.

Deacons Tom and Bill and myself will be available in the months of June, July and August to work with couples to plan for the Convalidation Mass. The "beauty" of a group Convalidation Mass is that the parish will plan the ceremony. There will be little to no expense for the couple. They and their witnesses will just have to show-up for a rehearsal and the Mass and not have to worry about wedding details.

Please give me a call at 245-2432 if you would like to set up an appointment to discuss the possibility of a Convalidation. I'm going to schedule these meetings for June since April is a busy month for me and I'll be away for most of May.

Did You Know?

Internet Safety for Kids

The Internet has become the new schoolyard for child molesters seeking girls or boys to victimize. Internet “chat rooms” provide a teenager with an opportunity to engage in a “live” conversation with friends from school or church, or with other teenagers from around the world. A chat room is similar to an old-style telephone party line, except that the teens are typing. Law enforcement has found that child molesters use chat rooms to gain easy and safe access to teens. Because of the seemingly caring and seductive talent of child molesters, teenagers should be warned that when they are in a chat room, they should never provide anyone with private, or personal, information, and especially their specific physical location.

LAST DAY OF CLASS!

God’s Work

When God wants an important thing done in this world or a wrong righted, He goes about it in a very singular way. He doesn't release thunderbolts or stir up earthquakes. God simply has a tiny baby born, perhaps of a very humble home, perhaps of a very humble mother. And God puts the idea or purpose into the mother's heart. And she puts it in the baby's mind, and then - God waits. The great events of this world are not battles and elections and earthquakes, and thunderbolts. The great events are babies, for each child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged with humanity, but is still expecting goodwill to become incarnate in each human life.

Laughter, The Best Medicine

Gasoline Prices In Church?

Last Saturday, right before the 5:00 p.m. vigil Mass, a lady visitor called me over to say that she had a good story for me to put in the bulletin this week under the heading of "Laughter, The Best Medicine."

She told me that right after her family got settled in their pew her young son looked up at the signboard in the sanctuary that shows the page number of the hymns at Mass and asked his mother if those were gasoline prices.

We are lucky they weren't because I think the first hymn was 534!

Congratulations To The Sime Family

Father Aleki Piula Sime was ordained a priest on December 6, 2007 in Tonga along with 5 other seminarians. Father Aleki is the son of Sione Sime, who is one of our parishioners.

Father Sime taught for four years before he entered the seminary. Father attended the Seminary of the South Pacific on the Island of Fiji. Father Aleki is a Salescian, that is, a member of the famous congregation of Saint Don Bosco. We are all looking forward to Father's next visit to Hawaii so that he will be able to celebrate Mass for our Tongan families and we can all meet him!

Development Fund Collection

This weekend, May 3-4, we will be taking up our monthly second collection for our development fund. All the money donated for this fund is used for the repair and renovation of parish facilities.

Are you a Registered Parishioner?

Parish registration is very important for the following reasons:

To receive the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and Matrimony.

To be a Godparent for Baptism or a Sponsor for Confirmation.

Some letters of reference ask whether people are registered members of the parish.

If you have not filled out a census card, the orange cards may be found on the tables at the front of the church.  They may be dropped in the collection basket, deposited in the “candle money” box, or returned to the parish office.

Changed Your Address?

If you have recently moved, or changed your address, please let us know by calling the parish office, 245-2432, so that we can update your information in our census data. This is particularly important if you are using the parishioner contribution envelopes.  The envelopes are mailed out quarterly to the address we currently have on file for you.  If your address has changed, the envelopes are returned to the parish with a 69¢ postage due fee.  Mahalo!

Aloha To Some Special Guests

The members of our 9:30 a.m. choir very happily welcomed Socrates and Flora Inonog and their family from California. Socrates and Flora used to host our then traveling choir when they went to the mainland for concerts. Socrates was on the faculty of Johnson Walls College in Rhodes Island. They put our choir up on the college campus. They also fed them with excellent meals. Socrates used to be a culinary arts professor at the college. Their visit brought back many happy memories to our older choir members!
