HEALTH NOTES

Prevent food borne illness. Raw sprouts may contain bacteria that can cause food borne illness.  Rinsing sprouts first does NOT remove bacteria.  Young children, the elderly, those with diabetes, pregnant women and people with cancer or a weakened immune system should NOT eat raw sprouts such as bean, alfalfa, clover or radish sprouts.               www.cfsan.fda.gov

Changed Your Address?

If you have recently moved, or changed your address, please let us know by calling the parish office, 245-2432, so that we can update your information in our census data. This is particularly important if you are using the parishioner contribution envelopes.  The envelopes are mailed out quarterly to the address we currently have on file for you.  If your address has changed, the envelopes are returned to the parish with a 69¢ postage due fee.  Mahalo!

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Did You Know?

Preventing Child Abuse Is Everyone’s Responsibility

It is every adult’s moral responsibility to protect possible victims by reporting the suspected abuse or neglect to the responsible authorities. Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive societal problem, and only concerted and sustained efforts by all adults in every segment of society can help to protect children and youth. If you suspect abuse of a minor, call Child Welfare Services at 808-832-5300 (on Oahu) and 800-494-3991 (neighbor islands).

Clergy Schedule

v  Father James Torrens, SJ arrives from California to cover parish duties while Father Bill is away for the priest's convocation and then vacation.

v  Father Bill and all priests in the diocese will be attending the annual priest's convocation on Oahu from May 5-9th. He will be on vacation from May 13-29th.

Convalidation Mass This September

I would like to plan a group Convalidation Mass for this September. A Convalidation marriage ceremony is an opportunity for couples that have been civilly married, (by a judge, a minister or a justice of the peace). The couple must be free to marry in the Catholic Church in order to have a Convalidation ceremony.

Deacons Tom and Bill and myself will be available in the months of June, July and August to work with couples to plan for this Convalidation Mass. The "beauty" of a group Convalidation Mass is that the parish will plan the ceremony. There will be little to no expense involved for the couple. They and their witnesses will just have to show-up for a rehearsal and the Mass and not have to worry about any wedding details.

Please give me a call at 245-2432 if you would like to set up an appointment to discuss the possibility of a

Convalidation. I'm going to schedule these meetings for June since April is already a busy month for me and I'll be away for most of the month of May, (priest's convocation and then two weeks of vacation).

Religious Education Schedule

v    Sunday, April 27th ~Regular Class Schedule

v    Saturday, May 3rd ~ 5:00 p.m. – Celebration of the Sacrament of First Communion

Alumni & Friends of St. Joseph School, Hilo

The annual alumni luau will be held Saturday, May 24th in Hilo and will honor the 50th Reunion Class (1958) and the 1958 Boys Basketball Territorial Championship Team.  The price is $25 per person.  Tickets and information can be obtained from Milton Crivello at 808-935-7753.

CCD Youth Sweetbread Sale

Our Youth Group will have the famous Carvalho Sisters’ Sweetbread available for purchase after all Masses on the weekend of April 26th and 27th.  At only $6 per loaf, you can’t afford to miss out on this tremendous taste treat.

Memorial Donation to Stained Glass Window Fund

A memorial donation of $800 has been given to the “Stained Glass Window Fund” in memory of Father Nobincio Fernandez, S.S.C.C.  Mahalo for your generosity!  We are certainly grateful for the demonstration of support for this project from our parishioners.

Attendance At Religious Education Class

We have only two weekends of religious education classes left in this spring semester. Sister Florence has a good team of very dedicated teachers who prepare lesson plans and show up week after week to teach our children. I would ask parents to match the effort of our teachers by taking responsibility by bringing your children to class.

All of our textbooks are sequential; each lesson builds upon the previous lesson. If children frequently miss class they start to get confused about where they are in the lesson plan. Please make attending class a priority for your children.

Laughter, The Best Medicine

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means?" The son replied, "I do know!" "Okay,” said his father. "What does the Bible mean?" "That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly, "It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.'

St. Theresa School Carnival

St. Theresa School in Kekaha held their annual school carnival on April 18 and 19th. A student honor guard holds the flags while the Star-Spangled Banner was sung. The carnival was a great success.

St. Catherine School Carnival

Angelica, Juliet, Sabrina, and baby Finau Tangatailoa (L-R) are shown here selling script tickets for St. Catherine's School Carnival, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 2 - 3rd. Script tickets will be used as currency at the carnival. It is much easier for everyone when script tickets are used in place of cash as it speeds up all money transactions at the carnival.

The Tangatailoa sisters will be selling script this weekend after all of our Masses. The pre-sale of script tickets is a big advantage for the school since it gives them some "start-up" money to buy all the supplies they need to hold the carnival. If you are not able to attend the carnival you may consider buying some script tickets anyway and give they away as gifts or you may choose to simply make a donation to the school.
