SECULAR FRANCISCANS ARRIVE ON KAUA`I

We are now in the process of forming a Secular Franciscan Fraternity here on Kauai. I feel there is great interest in having a group here dedicated to living the Gospel as St. Francis of Assisi lived it 800 years ago. We are members of this Religious Order for lay people and follow St. Francis' good example in living the Gospel, still vibrant today, in our daily lives.

There are 30,000 members already in the U.S., and almost one million in the world. If you feel God is calling you to this vocation, please contact me, John Paul Bonn, SFO, at (cell) 250-2349, or write to me: c/o General Delivery, Anahola, HI 96703, for a free brochure. Mahalo.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."

During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."

At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

A RETURN TO CIVILIZATION

The other day I was in the Honolulu Airport, my home away from home, getting ready to board my return flight to Lihue. One couple just got off the plane coming from Kauai and they spotted long lost friends who were in line with me getting ready to board the flight to Lihue. The four of them were very happy to see each other "after so many years."

The couple arriving from Kauai said that they were leaving Honolulu in the afternoon and that they had to "return to civilization."

That struck me as an odd and funny thing to say! As tourists they were probably vacationing at a four or five star resort hotel, in the United States, on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. I was trying to imagine what experiences on Kauai made them think they "had left civilization?" Were they attacked by some large predatory animal while walking the beach in Poipu? Maybe they encountered a lost tribe of headhunters in Kokee Park.

I'm going to start looking for the film crew from the Discovery Channel to see if they might start filming an episode of Tribal Life over here one of these days!

DEVELOPMENT COLLECTION

Today's second collection is for our parish's Development Fund. Monies collected will be used for repair and renovation of our various church buildings. We are presently working on several improvement projects at our school. We are always trying to make our property safe and attractive. We have been carefully inspecting all of our buildings and grounds in preparation for a property inspection by our insurance company later this spring.

HOLY HOUR FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL

We will have our monthly Holy Hour on Thursday, April 10th from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. We will have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, evening prayer, meditation time and we will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please join us for this prayerful and peaceful time before the Blessed Sacrament.

PARISH SECRETARY/BOOKKEEPER POSITION

Some of you may have heard the sad news that Marylee Harris, our parish secretary and bookkeeper, along with her husband Paul, will be moving to Austin, Texas this summer to be near their grand-daughter. It will be difficult but necessary, of course, to find a replacement for her. The ideal for me as pastor is to find one person who can fill both positions.

The position of  both secretary and bookkeeper is a full-time job. It may be necessary to have one person in the secretarial job and one serving as bookkeeper, both on a part-time basis. The salary level will be related to the applicant’s skill and experience.

Applications and job descriptions for the positions will be available at the receptionist’s desk in the rectory office on Monday, March 24th. The start-up date for the job is July 1, 2008.  Applicants are required to provide at least two references. The Catholic Church requires an independent background check on all new employees. The parish will pay a nominal fee for this background check. The background check is done with the applicant’s knowledge and permission.

Applicants for this position(s) do not need to be parishioners. It is, of course, very helpful if the parish secretary is Catholic. Please give me a call at 245-2432 if you would like more information about this position.

            Father Bill Shannon, Pastor
